Why join the course?

All eligible clinicians are now expected to incorporate genomic testing into their clinical practice. This can be a daunting task. Practical Genomics and Genetic Testing for the Non-geneticist offers a one-day course designed to equip healthcare professionals with essential genomics knowledge and skills for everyday clinical healthcare

Participants will learn how genomic variation can contribute to disease, how to request appropriate genomic investigations, interpret genomic test results, talk to patients about genomic testing and incorporate genomic data into patient management plans.

Audience

Doctors in training (especially medical and paediatric specialties), qualified general clinicians without a background in genomics education and clinical nurse specialists or midwives wanting to specialise in genomics. Desirable to be in possession of a medical or nursing degree or equivalent (a basic knowledge of topics will be required to benefit from the course material).

  • To assess eligibility for genetic testing, consent a patient for a genetic test, and order a genetic test with an ability to describe the potential clinical management implications e.g. access to high cost drugs or response to medication and principles of cascade screening
  • To critically analyse the legal and ethical implications of handling genomic data
  • Have a working knowledge of supportive resources e.g. HEE website and courses, GeNotes, Charities and, their local clinical genetics service
